My future love

Original Submission by Qaanita Surtie

My future love

I am still young,

with years stretched out before me,

yet somehow,

I already miss the little voices that have never called me "Mom."

I wonder if that's strange-

to ache for people I have never met,

to love hearts that haven't started beating inside my story yet.

One day,

I hope my house feels like my grandparents' home-

the kind of place where laughter lingers in the walls,

where every room holds a memory worth retelling,

where the front door never feels heavy,

because love always answers first.

I hope my children grow up collecting stories the way other children collect toys.

Stories about their father lifting them onto his shoulders to help them touch the stars.

Stories about late-night drives,

inside jokes,

burnt pancakes on Saturday mornings, and adventures that become family legends.

I pray their father is the kind of man who chooses his children before the noise of the world,

the kind who protects their hearts without ever making them question how deeply they are loved.

But most of all,

I pray he loves their mother well.

Not because I need perfection,

but because children learn love from the way they watch it.

And when I look into my children's eyes,

I hope I smile and say,

"You are so much like your father,"

with pride filling every corner of my heart.

I pray that somewhere,

the man meant for us is growing into the father my children deserve,

just as I am growing into the mother they will need.

I dream of quiet nights,

all of us piled into one bed,

telling stories long after bedtime,

laughing until our stomachs ache,

listening without judgment,

holding every secret,

every fear,

every impossible dream.

I hope my children tell me everything,

the way I tell my mom everything.

Because she taught me that home isn't always a place-

sometimes it's a person who makes your heart feel safe.

I want to be that person.

I want my children to run toward me,

not away from me.

To know that no mistake could ever make my love smaller.

I hope one day they speak about my work with shining eyes,

telling people,

"That's my mom."

Not because of titles, or money, or success-

but because they saw the strength it took to keep showing up,

to love fiercely,

to build a life they could be proud to call home.

The same way I speak of my own mother.

With admiration.

With gratitude.

With a heart so full it can never quite find enough words.

Until then,

I'll keep becoming.

I'll keep praying for the man I've never met,

for the children I've never held,

for the home I've already built a thousand times inside my imagination.

Because love sometimes arrives long before the people do.

And maybe that's why,

even while I'm still young,

I already miss you.

I'll be waiting.

With stories to tell,

arms wide open,

and a home that has always belonged to you.
