Me and my husband
Me and my husband
Hands clutched behind our backs
Stand on opposite sides of the line
As the judge slams the gavel
Me and my husband
We are doing better
My wedding ring always on
Although, a size too small
Me and my husband
Oh how he shows his love
Hugs me so tight it aches
His hands smothering me in prints
Me and my husband
Oh how well he knows me
My favorite chocolate every time
As for my bruises- he’ll console me
Me and my husband
Strings of my hair clung to his flannel
He’d chuckle, eyes hazy
As he sprays water from a hose
Stepping here and there
Boots slamming on the leaves
As the water rains down on the washing line
I, still hanging the sheets
Me and my husband
We were doing better
Then his laughter became a sign
That I must huddle to myself
My dress ripped from the side
One he bought me last May
The same I wore the night before
He took his decision, with his hands and his heart
As the gavel now falls
And the slam plunges us into silence
I see my husband walk
Away from me. I remain
As his hands are bound behind his back
And he walks, walks and walks away
And I remain
Watching
All the way from the casket
