Long Way

By the doorway, I stay— a cascade of jasmine

waiting for him to reach.

A chain of turmeric

rests upon my bosom,

waiting for him to dwell.

The clings on my wrist,

the chime beneath my steps,

calling for his return.

Two little eyes,

never dimming

for the loss of his sight.

Cupped hands of laddu,

waiting to sweeten him.

Day along, I stay— waiting,

if only he would step out

of that long coach of guns.

Yet came the shining moon.

I ran inside,

dreaming of seeing him the next morning.

By the doorway, I stayed.

Then— a van halted. Four men jumped out.

My eyes searched

for that familiar pair of eyes.

Then out slid

a long box,

covered with roses.

My mother hugged me tightly.

My heart

felt its weight.

I stepped ahead,

past my father,

and fell to my knees,

tears beginning to roll.

Oh, poor me!

The two hands

I had waited to hold me— lay inside,with closed eyes.
