In Silence did my Spirit Grow

Original Submission by Daksha Renjit Nair

"In Silence did my Spirit grow..."

In silence did my spirit grow,

In murky moonlit skies,

A smell of salty flow of time,

Across the midnight waves.

Laughter echoes in faintest light,

The soul has cleaned its filth,

We huddled in familial warmth,

Grains of sand at our fingertips.

Now dread reacts to echoed silence,

‘spite empty skies that bear the sounds

of wailing sirens in the distance,

and empty hearts of all.

Separation hurts like wilting flowers,

Like the end of every season,

The last drop of rainfall today,

The stars that disappear in the day.

Never did a wise one leave family,

But I was none the wiser,

For all the while it lasted,

How did I not see it sooner?

Family shatters its heart of glass,

Pieces brushing against fingertips,

Of calloused hands to spark a revelation,

Of the conjuncture now elapsed.

The days and nights I stayed in fear,

Came a spark of hope that registered

In a crumbling heart of regrets,

“She is alive,” they said.

In silence did my spirit grow,

When life had become ephemeral,

When responsibility became meaningful,

And family became first.
