***

if my eye were made of glass,

I’d wrap it in cloth, dip it in brass

and hope for my lid to sag

over its unnatural cast

to avoid flashing you the gore

of my bloody, brainy soul

and making you love me no more

but if my other eye were copper

I’d polish it, make it look proper

and if I ever were to come up short

I’d simply smash my face

into a window display

and a lucky penny would fall from my giant pore

but now, what can I do with one glass eye?

I sit and ponder,

and poke my stye

if my eye were made of solid stone

my thumb would bow

and rub it till it shone

but it never would, is what I've been told

so I'll dip it in straight gold

now the world is honey draped

and life is sweet

because I can pay

the children laugh like entrepreneurs

the missiles shine like fireworks

and so, as I wake one day

my eyes are gone

I trace the empty sockets

with my palm

and the radio comes on
