Lucky You, Because Nothing Happened
Kyla Jagger
You think your childhood was lucky.
Until you realise
it was someone else’s discipline.
Someone else’s overtime.
Someone else’s exhaustion.
Someone else’s sacrifice,
so well hidden
you mistook it for normal.
Children don’t remember
the electricity never going off.
They don’t remember
that the fridge was always full.
They don’t remember
that the school fees were paid on time.
They remember none of it.
Because nothing happened.
No darkness swallowed the house.
No empty shelves announced themselves.
No unpaid bill became a conversation
at the dinner table.
Nothing happened.
Because somewhere,
someone made sure it didn't.
And perhaps that is the tragedy.
The greatest achievement of a provider
is that his family never notices
how close chaos could have been.
Lucky you.
Nothing happened.
