I Am Inescapable

I am inescapable

I am seven

I huddle in the back of the car

The shifting shade and light over my face

Seatbelt holding onto my stomach

Eyes and ears alert to a pained, struggling attempt at breathing ahead of me

I am inescapable

I am twelve

I have grown scales

And spikes and odd colors across my arms

I sit crouched behind the lunch tables

Skin folding into itself

As they roam and chuckle above me

I am inescapable

I am fourteen

I have grown a conscience

And a heavy , consuming air of purpose

The lack of necessity floats around me

Reminds me of the absence of my monument

Which I had been promised

I am inescapable

I am sixteen

I am a mix of shame and brightness and more

To the possibility of more, I tether

I turn and stare at the girl next to my seat

Applying her gloss, mascara, tight shirt fitting her

And I feel my heart shrink

She looks at me. Stills. I hide the landline of my soul

And I do not look away

I am inescapable
