Hyperaware

I see the world too clearly now,

Each thread pulled loose and bare.

The magic left when meaning did,

And all that remains is air.

I used to flinch when feelings came,

A heart too quick to race,

But now I watch them from afar

Like echoes lost in space.

Can’t cry when I expected pain,

Can’t rage when I relate.

I understand too much to burn,

Too numb to even hate.

I scroll through days is greyscale tones,

With nothing sharp or sweet.

The world goes on, but I just drift,

A ghost with steady feet.

I envy who I used to be,

All fever, blush and storm.

At least she felt the highs and lows

Before she knew their form.

I wish I didn’t know so much,

This curse of being wise.

It’s hard to breathe with open eyes

And truth that never lies.

So here I sit, inside my head,

A maze without a map.

Waiting for something, anything –

To spring the final trap.

Or maybe just to feel again,

To ache, or want, or scream.

To break this perfect mental cage

And fall back into dream.
