Gehen

I wish to build a bridge across a chasm so vast

Across which no soul has dared to walk past

A bridge made of longing, of sweat and of hope

A monument that would last beyond time's long rope

One by one I will carry each stone

Spanning the chasm I must conquer alone

I want to pierce the fog where the shadows sleep

Hauling myself from the edge of the deep

I know you won't cross it, you won't even try,

You tremble to look at a drop from so high.

You will stay on safe shores in the comfort of light,

And leave my creation alone in the night.

So why would I toil for a bridge made of stone,

If I know it will weather the ages alone?

Why would I sweat for a ghost of a path,

To suffer the silence and nature's wrath?

I want to build something mine, something steady and grand.

It doesn't need footprints to prove it can stand.

I am not building this bridge just for you to walk through,

I will build it to prove what my own hands can do.

Yet if I am honest, while I stand alone,

Watching the fog swallow my sweat and the stone,

I don't need a crowd for my work to be true...

But I’d still smile if you decided to walk

through.
