Flag in Bio.

Every morning assembly at school

a reminder,

“This country taught you for free”

“Serve it back one day”

Years Later the same students who stood up in the line,

Added Sri Lanka’s flag to their Instagram bio,

like a souvenir keychain,

a decorative attachment.

Yet,

It is Europe that glows through the phone screens

the promised land,

the emergency exit,

the permanent vacation.

It’s funny, since nobody leaves quietly.

Everyone must first announce,

how unbearable it is to stay.

“The roads!”

“The politicians!”

“The salaries!”

“The future!”

“Everything is broken!”

They say, while packing their lives

into 23 Kilograms.

Then they leave.

Not to learn and return, not to build, not to serve,

But, to escape. Forever!

Yet the flag proudly sits in the Bio.

and somewhere, a familiar song keeps playing,

“Ape rate anagathe punchi api thamai...”

Yes, We were the future of our country.

But are we really?
