Five-year-old me

I stare at myself as a digital 5-year-old.

I wonder why the flame inside me now burns so cold...

That same flame which used to warm me while dancing in the rain,

has now stopped dancing in the wind due to paralysing pain.

The embers of my soul now glow pathetically,

when I look at the fiery light emanating from my younger face...

I long for the days when I lived unapologetically.

The days where I knew life as an adventure and not a race.

I can almost feel the heat escaping from my phone's screen.

In those younger years, my flame truly burned clean,

without worrying if it is too hot or too bright.

It just burned because it felt right.

When I now look into the mirror and enter my eyes,

I no longer see that ever-burning bush, nor feel its heat.

I only see soaking wet branches smothered by unwept cries.

The holy ground now turned into mud beneath my naked feet.

But,

When I look at that picture of a five-year-old me,

I know that I am still He.

I know that my flame was made to burn brighter than the stars.

And I know that it still can, though it has many scars.

I know that my soul can once again ignite,

and illuminate even the darkest hours of any night.

That five-year-old me does not just exist on my phone's drive,

but it is a voice inside, encouraging me to once again come alive.

I am still that five-year-old me.

God heals my wounds inflicted by our enemy.

The love of Christ is what makes me whole,

and His divine flame gives dancing lessons to my soul.
