eurydice

in hell, or whatever upside

downturned dreamscape you name

the recesses of the mind your once homeland

that contained the city we roamed at three a.m.

now just large enough to fit your fingertips

the flowers you planted there

now line the gravestone of what will never be

and the decade old petrichor fills my nose

when your ghost finds me, a hazy silhouette

translucent under nostalgic skies

I reach out to you, grasping at the embers of the flame

that lit your torch and your moon-catching eyes

searching for the shape of your lips and

I hear your half-asleep laugh on the precipice of

the living

and I look back, every time at you, through

a rose-tinted lens of starred messages

and archived photographs, and hand

scribbled notes and three-paged letters of your

ink on my carbon copy heart

and every time, at you

and you're gone again, the scarlet

realization burying the shards of

our strawberry orchard dreams

sharp enough to bloody my hands

but not to stop them reaching out
