Deer Friend

I drag this broken body

Down a desolate trail

Your smile bore fangs

Dripping with infection

Seeping into ragged wounds

Your kindness snapped spindly limbs

Tangled in overgrown branches

These bones will catch fire

Once parasites have cleaned my flesh free

Your mercy is a hunting game

Circling foolish prey

Were the doe eyes mine

Reflected in your gleaming hunger

I bury my carcass

In a lonely crevice

In a vacant hole

And pray the vulture won’t

Catch the scent of decay

In life, I

Stupidly allowed

Your careless picking of my brain

This clumsy clawing at my heart

You played with my entrails

With the casual playfulness of a predator

Lapping at the blood pooling at your feet

While I nurtured your greed

Until day surrendered to night

But I refuse to go gently

Into the dark

I could keep these hands clean

But I fear

You’ve made a wolf out of me
