Cooked Alive

Luminous faces, blurred by heat,

smiles written large, loaden with greed.

Thick misty glass and steam failed to hide,

their grit in anticipation of taste and pride.

They raised their voices with animated zeal,

I lumped in a corner, my eyes squealed.

‘He can’t hear, he doesn’t feel pain’,

I squirmed, retracted my limbs, to get away in vain.

‘He won’t remember’ – one voice crowed,

‘Even if he did, he won’t notify.’

‘Hurry up! raise the heat’,

‘Add salt to cook his meat.’

I retracted my legs from the advancing rod,

a conqueror’s laugh pierced me like a shot.

Eyes open or closed- my vision extinguished,

the echoing voices faded as did the heated medium.

The last breath I took remained encaged,

and the grip of time lost it’s embrace.

Epitaph for the dead lobster:

“Only 7year-old: Could have lived long – if allowed!”
