Change

I once had a heart

That knew how to love and hold.

A heart that knew how to embrace and sacrifice,

Confident in heartbeat and tone.

But now-

As I enter a life unknown:

A world filled with possibilities and hope,

Filled with disparity and love,

Filled so deeply with individuality, that I am engulfed by it.

I can’t recognize this heart I once knew.

And I yearn to change.

And meld into the world before me.

Nestling into each corner and crevice,

Hoping to change this daunting possibility into a new dream.

And so I search.

And hope to change.

But as I look around,

I don’t know where my heart is.

I look for it in drawers and cubbies,

I check whether it’s stuffed in the pocket of my hoodie,

Or clinging to static in the washing machine.

I search for my heart with flames,

and sparks,

and torches.

But I cannot see in this darkness.

My heart is blended somewhere into this macabre world before me.

And I remind myself that it will not always be dark,

The sun will rise,

And light will flood through me.
