Burnt

My shadow sits on the teacher’s desk

and unzips its hood. It picks up

a piece of chalk and writes all over

the board I couldn’t understand

time had struck and left

my name carved in green minerals.

I was gum-grinded, stretched,

snapped on, but meant to not break apart.

The tiles I walked on were teeth.

My mind:

an elderly hand trembling

like grades suffocated by deadlines,

my eyes gorged by the screen’s blazing blue light.

Someone cheered; I smiled from reflex,

ignoring my unleashed shoelaces

and worn out sneakers.

A candle’s wick set ablaze,

its wax splattered on a red carpet.

I stepped off the stage with melted socks,

dizzy, fingerprints on the wrong door.

We packed our exhaustion in silence.

We limped past the poster of winners.

Like gum under a desk, we waited, stuck.
