Bravery

Original Submission by Aaliyah Hoosen

He stood. Just stood. Not doing much. His shirt slightly crumpled and his tie a faded red. Overall he looked pretty put together. That’s what he was aiming for atleast. His started messing with his hair, beginning to think it looked to untamed. Then he stopped.

Relax.

He looked up and gazed at the café across the street. It was a lovely joint. It served exquisite works of art that were called “Drinks”. He would kill to try thr matcha latte. It was just the whole price out of his price range. They had pastries as well. From croissants to cakes to tarts to donuts, my goodness.

It was 5 minutes to 12.

He took a deep breath. And a deeper one. Lets do this. He walked across the street and entered the store. Immediately he felt out of place. He felt judged by the patrons who gave him half a glance. He felt like he smelt a little to funky in this world of Versace, Gucci and who knows what else. He was about to run out of the café when a voice called out to him. “Hey, my guy! Are you the candidate to be interviewed at 12?”

I licked my lips. And nodded. The lady beckoned him over to a door and he came. “Let us just go to my office. I’m the manager by the way.” He was so intimidated. “It’s amazing to have a candidate. Most folkes don’t want to work in a measly coffee shop.” He had started to shake in his to tight shoes. “Alright. Shall we begin our interview?”

The office was nice. Tastefully decorated and there were so many plaques on the wall. So many achievements. He looked at them and wished. Hoped even. But that would never…

“So candidate” The manager looked up smiling.

The interview seemed to go well. The manager was friendly and he was able to answer all of the questions. “Now, however, I have a question. You listed ‘Greenpark Shelter’ as your place of residence?” And there it was. The part of the interview I was dredding.

“I- uh, yeah. I’m homeless.”

It sounded as if I had shouted. The room went silent for a second. The manager looked at me as if I had grown three heads. “Well if I assume you don’t have a bank account, would I be correct?” I nodded wondering when they were going to kick me out. “So how would you like your payment?” I was utterly confused. “What do you mean?”

“Well you have the job! I would just like to know how to pay you?”

“Even though I am homeless?”

“And now why would that affect your terms of employement? I can see past a struggle that you are facing.” “Well most employers can’t.”

I exited the café, starting tomorrow.

That was one of the hardest things I had ever had to do.

But you know what.

I did it.

And that, I would like to call, is bravery.
