Before I Do

My face is against the window.

Outside,

the world is grey with rain and cold.

Inside,

my breath stains the glass white.

Along the window, rain drops and drips,

alternating pauses and races toward an inevitable end. I envy them.

Every pause feels as a lingering moment in time, of which the cause enveloped cannot be mine.

To know the direction of your fall

must be easier

than not knowing whether you will rise again.

The heat of my flesh clouds the glass.

I pray it gives way

before my skull does.

His forceful hand progresses upon my face

As though it will reach no end—

The pressure grows, and my vision blurs

Cracking joins the ringing in my ears

and the thumping in my chest.

What of the life I’ve lived, and the composure I’ve cast? Fear—now physical—no longer a lie

This deliberation will be my last;

I am going to die.

And in the strange stillness

between one heartbeat and the next,

I think of home.

I wanna tell my dad I'm sorry, and I wanna tell my mom it's okay. He would always worry, and she would always pray.

I begin to lose focus on the water, now seeing beyond —I see my reflection.

Rapidly blinking & squirming as though I will save him— The pitiful, weak fool—he never stood a chance.

He had been given grace beyond the brim,

and still,

he chose to waste it.

His head drops, and finality drips down his limp body, He cries out to life—

And I chase it.
