A Letter to My Parents
To: Papa and Amah
From: Your daughter
Papa, this message is for both of you. I am doing okay, and I will never give up on what I am doing. I know it is not easy, but I will do my level best with all the effort I can put into my studies.
You did not force this choice on me; you only suggested the best option because I was—and still am—unsure of my own heart’s desires, which I know I will discover as I grow older. You guided me because you know my potential, behaviour, strengths, and weaknesses. It was my choice to follow your advice. No matter what I might say when I am emotional, I will never quit my mission.
Papa, I am sorry for making you worry or feel bad with whatever I said when I was emotional. I should have tried to be more rational, but I am only human, and I express myself most deeply with the people I love. I will never blame you or hold a grudge. This path was my choice, and I accept the journey ahead.
Your happiness means everything to me. I know you say my happiness is more important because I have a longer life ahead, but your joy and satisfaction are my greatest achievements. Please forgive me if I ever hurt your feelings. Even when I act like I am not listening to your advice, I am—I just like being pampered by both of you.
I will complete this task at my level best. I will never give up, and even if I stumble, I will try again. I am secure on my own feet now, and I know you have raised me with rationality and love. I will graduate as a doctor, and I will live life to the best of my abilities no matter where life takes me. Honest work is God sent.
I love you, Papa. I love you, Amah. Please stand by me—I will always need both of you.
With all my love,
Saragouri Mohan
