A Letter to Music

When I fell in love with you,

I was a little over five.

We’d sing, dance and make melodies anew,

Always in search of the best rhyme.

Obsessed with you – God! The time I spent

On chord qualities and tension notes;

There was a sacred bond forming

A gift, a perspective, every time we wrote.

You were my first love,

With me through my second, third and fourth,

And when all of them frayed away

With you, I weaved them into songs.

You made me come alive

Brought purpose to my soul

And I was careless with you

I tried to turn us into gold.

I let them tell us what we’re worth

I paraded us all over the internet

As though we needed validation

From people we’ve never met.

I said, “We could really go somewhere!”

As though staying still was not enough

But if I’m honest, what I meant there

Was “I could be the diamond in the rough.”

I sprinted in search of greatness,

And left you lagging behind.

It was a marathon, realized in my lateness

We were irreparable by that time.

But I tried, I gave it all I had

And the more I did, the more we bled

Desperate to keep going, many a skin I shed

But what use is it to resuscitate the dead.

So now, when I attend shows

The seven-year-old in me grieves

For all I had to let go

I bear the weight of one bereaved.

If we shall ever love again,

I do not know

I ruined us, I’m sorry

And now I must go.

How strange that there was a time

Where there was no me without you

But I must have grown, this much I know

If I stand alone and still have value.

And yet, because of you,

I know not how to put down my pen

You’ve laid paths for my thoughts

I find myself writing again.

Today I make bread and write poetry

Because even now, I am an artist

And if I cannot do it with you

There will be where my art lives.
