5 PM, Colombo

I’m jammed in the 138,

red bus groaning, brakes screaming,

elbows stabbing, backpacks crushing,

sweat dripping into someone else’s sleeve.

Then I see her,

Twenty-ish, just like me

gliding past in a black Prado,

windows dark, leather shining,

air-conditioning humming like heaven.

She laughs at something on her phone.

sips a cold drink I can't even dream of

and for a moment, I imagine

what it would be like to ride that road.

Then I realize

we’re both going home.
