By Sabari G Rajan
The English translation of the poem written in Malayalam is given below.
Silent Woman
Once upon a time,
I started conversing,
Even when I was just a fetus,
Inside the womb
Of a chatterbox mother.
A chatterbox;
Even before white jasmine buds sprouts,
And tear through the pink gums.
Parrot, Myna and I were similar.
“How marvelous her chatter is!”
Those who found amusement
In my chitchat,
Made me, the dragonfly
To pick stones.
My unstoppable conversations to,
People who came along
Cockroaches, lizards,
Worms, Cats, every
Living thing and plants
Were carried on.
I learned to be silent,
For the first time,
When I joined Anganwadi.
In the traditional school,
When the age old teacher
Ask to pick the red colour
Leaves of a weed,
To brighten the letters
Written on the palm leaves,
With an iron needle,
I was the one gone for them.
“Ey, Red plant, I am picking your two leaves.”
When ages fried,
The ability to speak,
In a frying pan,
It shrunken too little.
“Don’t speak at wherever needed
And wherever need not.”
“You should learn
Where and how to speak.”
The pan had fried me enough,
And the life have flown,
Yet I haven’t learned it.
Now…
The pain which has to be expressed,
When are not channelized
And steams inside,
The anger bit the heart out of rage,
Likewise, innumerable
Blasts burst and spread
Across the inside of mine,
I become a silent woman.
I could construct
Only one word
At that time,
By gathering letters
From the alphabets.
FORGIVE!
One I needed the most,
Than the listeners.
Then,
Conversations die.
During the times of non-conversation,
I remove the petiole of life.
The shadow puppet, myself
Is set in fire.
The smoke that smells of
My soul is shrieking.
I just evaporate.
