लेबर चौराहा

वे सूरज से पहले आते हैं

और सूरज ढलने के बाद जाते हैं।

कौन हैं वे लोग और कहाँ से आते हैं,

चौराहे पर जमघट क्यों लगाते हैं?

क्या गर्मी इन्हें तपाती नहीं

या सर्दी इन्हें ठिठुराती नहीं?

उन्हें समय नहीं है मुझसे बात करने का।

उनकी निगाहें इंतज़ार करती हैं

किसी बाइक सवार का,

और बाइक सवार की निगाह में खुद के आ जाने का।

मगर औरतें बाइक सवार की ओर नहीं भागतीं,

बस चबूतरों पर बैठकर भीड़ छंट जाने का इंतज़ार करती हैं।

जो चुन लिए गए, उनके चेहरों पर एक तसल्ली-सी है,

मगर जिन्हें नहीं चुना गया, वे टूटी आशाओं का चेहरा हैं।

काँपती साँसों से वे फिर इंतज़ार करेंगे-

तपती धूप में, बिना किसी छाँव के-

किसी नए के आने का और स्वयं के चुने जाने का।

मगर मेरे साथ-साथ वे भी यह जानते हैं कि

न चुने जाने का अनुपात, चुने जाने के अनुपात से कहीं अधिक है,

फिर भी वे इंतज़ार करेंगे उस समय तक

जब तक सूरज सर पर नहीं चढ़ जाता।

सुना है, रोज़ी के चार रास्ते यहीं से खुलते हैं,

मगर इन रास्तों से गरिमा क्यों भींच ली जाती है,

और ये दृश्य तुम्हें और मुझे सामान्य क्यों लगने लगते हैं?
