ये हिसाब चुकता हो नहीं सकता

थोड़ा वक़्त और मिल जाता,

थोड़ी देर और रुक जाते,

थोड़ी सी बात और हो जाती,

शायद सारे हिसाब चुकता हो जाते।

क्यों जलूँ मैं रोज़,

क्यों ख़ुद से लड़ूँ मैं रोज़-

ये बता जाते।

चाहत जब है ही नहीं,

तो इस सीने में इतना दर्द क्यों है?

तुम हो नहीं,

फिर भी तुम्हारी यादें क्यों हैं?

क्या ये सिलसिला रुक नहीं सकता?

तुम एक बार मिलो

और फिर कभी न मिलो-

क्या ऐसा हो नहीं सकता?

कोई एहसास अधूरा न रह जाए,

कोई छोटी बात याद न रह जाए,

मैं खुलकर रो लूँ एक बार,

फिर ये आँसू तुम्हारे नाम के न आएँ।

क्या ऐसा हो नहीं सकता?

मैं तुम्हें ख़ुद से अलग कर दूँ,

फिर कभी न जोड़ूँ,

तुम कोई भूली-बिसरी राह नहीं हो

जिस पर मैं फिर कभी न चलूँ।

ऐसा कुछ हो नहीं सकता।

कुछ समय के लिए ही सही,

क्या तुम रुक नहीं सकते?

ये जो भीतर हिसाब बाकी है-

ये हिसाब चुकता

हो नहीं सकता।
