अरे, कोई तो रोको इन चार दीवारों को,

यह मेरी ओर बढ़ रही है --

धीरे, पर निश्चित गति से।


हर ईंट जैसे नफ़रत में डूबी हो,

हर कोना मेरा नाम पुकारता,

और मैं--

भय से सिकुड़ती जा रही हूँ।


एक क्षण को लगा,

मैं इन दीवारों में विलीन हो जाँऊगी।

पर भीतर कहीं,

एक साहस की लौ काँप उठी --

और मैं भाग निकली।


अब मैं दर्पण के सामने खड़ी हूँ।

होंठो पर हँसी है,

पर दर्पण में चेहरा व्याकुल।

मैं ठिठक गयी --

कौन हूँ मैं ?

वह, या मेरा प्रतिबिंब ?


दिन बीतते गए।

प्रतिबिंब ने भी मुस्कुराना सीख लिया।

और उन चार दीवारों से

जो रोज मुझे डराती थी,

आज मैंने बात की--

धीरे, स्नेह से।


वे अब भी वही हैं,

पर आज

वे मुझे घेरती नहीं,

संभालती हैं।
