Wings Behind Bars

By Anaya Sheth

In a bustling big city, there lived a small bird

Exquisite, rosy, but with eyes filled with the sorrows of the world

Then I finally found the reason why

It was scared of people who would cage it from its own life

You see, the bird had witnessed that before

Many of its friends were captured and locked away

The little bird’s heart and soul belonged in the sky

And the thought of a cage made it spend sleepless nights

It dreamt to touch the stars one day

But would it have the courage to fight?

One day, the nasty men succeeded in their plan

They grabbed the bird and took it from its clan

The bird was now trapped in a cage

Its eyes filled with tears and rage

Heartbroken, the poor soul looked lost

All due to humans’ cruelty and ruthlessness

This bird isn’t the only one, there are many such in this world

It makes my blood boil for these sweet creatures of the air

How would we feel if trapped behind bars?

Caging for our pleasure, is that what we are?
