Why Is My Ache Pretty?

You call me pretty,

but I only notice my cracked lips,

too scared to speak.

You call me elegant,

but I only notice my hunched back,

carrying the weight

you promised to lift.

You call my curls mesmerizing,

but I only notice them losing their shape,

not being able to surrender

to the storms you left behind.

You call me admirable,

but I only notice

the black ink beneath my eyes

you used to rewrite

the lines on my forehead.

You call my smile radiant,

but I only notice

how carefully I drew it

before facing the world.

You call me effortless,

but I see the craters on my skin,

the same skin

that you forced to ache.

You call me flawless,

but I only remember

how I taught myself to survive.
