While It Is Happening

We spend so much of our lives

waiting for something to happen.

Waiting for Friday.

For summer.

For the next birthday.

For the day everything finally

falls into place.

And all the while,

life is happening quietly

in the spaces between.

In the morning light

across the kitchen table.

In the friend who makes you laugh

when you weren't expecting to.

In the song you will one day hear

and suddenly miss this exact age.

We don't know

when a moment becomes a memory.

There is no warning.

So maybe we should stop

waiting for our lives to begin.

Maybe this is it.

This ordinary Tuesday.

This unfinished dream.

This version of ourselves

that won't exist forever.

Maybe the point

is not to hold onto time,

but to look around

while it is happening

and think,

I am here.

And this is enough.
