When it Rains

The chirping got louder. The clouds turned grey. The squirrels rustled warning, As birds flew home -

The rain was coming.

Slowly, the sun hid behind The mountains,

And the breeze escaped Their chains.

Pitter, Patter -

Fell the rain

On tin roofs

And thatched huts.

The rain showered

On dusty villages

And rich cities -

Every nook and cranny.

The rain washed

The dust

Off the palace domes,

Like a royal blessing.

They sat beside the fire, On caramel couches,

Reading fiction,

And calling the storm

“Cozy.”

While we run around,

Searching for clay pots

That aren't cracked,

To catch the leaking water.

While our sand walls

Wash away,

We don’t run for cover.

It rains on everyone -

But for us,

There's work tomorrow,

To collect hay and mix the mud.
