When a Name Becomes a Noun

A new day begins, as it always does,

and the world moves on.

But somewhere in the quiet corner,

A hand once held, has fallen still.

The warmth of an embrace,

the quiet certainty of touch is

now stilled, voiceless without any

reply.

Oh the body,

once enough to be loved for

simply existing,

Gathered into arms, called beautiful

without question,

now lies, stilled.

No longer beloved,

no longer someone.

As if nothing was ever meant to stay.

A reminder of how quickly a

name becomes a noun,

how swiftly devotion loses its

language.

For some,

flames take the charge.

It rises,

fierce and unflinching.

Engulfing what was once held dear

without pause, without grief.

It climbs the ribs

that once rose for laughter.

Consuming the lungs,

that once puffed the air of pride

until nothing remains,

but ashes, fine and grey.

For others,

the earth takes the charge.

Lowered,

into a silence that does not echo.

Returned,

to what does not remember the return.

Slowly the work begins,

unseen and patient.

The same heart, once full,

now empty.

The same hands, once reaching,

falls still.

Undone,

by the quiet work within beneath

the skin.

And for the rest,

science takes the charge,

Laid open,

not in cruelty but in curiosity.

Traced, measured and named.

A structure to be studied,

a form to be understood.

Yet nothing records

how it once felt,

to be held,

How warmth answered warmth,

how presence meant everything.

What remains,

can be explained but never returned.

And slowly,

mourning loosens.

What was once unbearable

becomes distant.

A name spoken less,

a presence felt less often.

until memory itself

learns to be quiet.

Remembered by some,

mourned by few,

forgotten by many,

as most things are.
