What does happiness mean exactly?

By Divya Kesarkar

“All that glitters is not gold” – William Shakespeare

Find a person, who is happy, with sound sleep on earth, everybody ran to find one; on their way they met a few each one having a different story altogether striking how irksome their life is.

Politicians distressed about debates, management pressure and social work. Bankers about targets, numbers and promotions. Businesspersons about black money and tax. Engineers are working day and night over projects. Lawyers ranting cases but milti hai toh sirf “taarikh pe taarikh”. Police officers managing high profile cases to gain limelight. Doctor’s serve 24X7 for the life of patients to provide best medication competing with other hospitals.

With no luck to find a person who is happy, in disturbed state of mind sitting under a tree, a farmer was having his food tied in a “mulmul” cloth given by his wife with love and care, working hard in the fields; sweating; within a fraction of time the farmer finished his food and was fast asleep with a smile on his face; a sound peaceful sleep. The farmer was happy living a freewheeling life slogging hard in the fields to earn his living all through the day and the satisfaction of keeping his family happy.

Having a lavish lifestyle is happiness or joining a group of kids throwing stones at the tree experiencing a moment to help fall a fruit can bring smile? Buying a car is happiness or roaming threesome on a bicycle having fun is a memory cherished? Eating a pizza is happiness or licking fingers over mother’s home cooked “dal-chaawal” is heaven? Buying branded clothes is happiness or wearing mom’s old kanjeevaram sari changes something? Having a thousand friends is happiness or having one loyal friend who understands and is always there in good and bad times is peace? Going to the USA is happiness or visiting parents in hometown who shaped you and made you capable for what and who you are today is precious?
