About the Work
In "We all cry alone," Valeria Scalese masterfully captures the poignant theme of loneliness amidst the crowd. Through vivid imagery and introspective questioning, the poem explores the internal conflict of knowing right from wrong yet choosing the path of inaction. It reflects on the shared human experience of silent suffering and the unspoken desire for someone to bridge the gap of isolation with understanding and compassion.

We all cry alone
Saw a lone girl crying on the train
made me wonder whether I could solve her pain
I could’ve gone over and consoled her
Instead, I stayed in the safety of my own corner
Watched a group of kids in the mall
a boy in their centre getting shoved
Watched how he struggled to stand tall
while they laughed like they had the right to kick him around
like some kind of ball
Am I a bad person?
for knowing what is right,
yet never trying to fight
Does it make me evil?
for choosing to gaze out of the window.
to watch the sun set
But even the brightest hues of orange can’t hide
the guilt my reflection tries to deflect
Desperately I hold on to the fact
that I too,
have shed tears in public
with no one there
to offer their hand
Because maybe turning up the music
helps fight the voices in your head
that urge you to console me,
so you don’t feel the shame of someone else’s pain
We all know the feeling in our chest
when the hurting becomes too much
and all we need is for someone to offer us their heart
until ours finds back out of the dark
But nobody ever comes
And it makes us realize
That at the end of the day
We all cry alone
