I asked the universe for a reason

And it returned in silence,

The thunder lightening of creation

It didn’t answer my longing question.

I asked the universe for a reason

And it introduced me to a friend,

Who I lost somewhere in the deep end

Yet the universe quietly chuckled.

I asked the universe for just one reason

For the explanation of misery, of pain,

Of why things hurt again and again

Why we feel so much guilt and shame.

It echoed back it’s awfully lonesome voice

That reason is the death of curiosity,

It’s the end of every possible choice

As if reason ruled us, would we ever rejoice.

If you had a constant reason to love someone

You would stop finding little things that surprise you,.

If you had a stagnant reason for loss

You wouldn’t ever feel everything so deeply in the blue.

If there was reason for kindness and hope

You wouldn’t find the deepest joy in a joke,

If reason ruled the world

You probably wouldn’t fall so deeply for that unknown girl.

So if you ask for reason

I will give you stories to tell the future,

As reason will only take away

The beauty, the amusement and the glory of wonder.
