Unfinished Friendships

By Ravina Sewani

How often do you get to befriend someone who gels with your personality like butter on bread?

but also stays at a distance like oil and water

How often do you get to experience friendships where there is a will to empower each other?

but also make them soft targets of your jealousy

How often do you laugh with them as if no one is watching?

but also become self-centered to put your foot forward

How often do you cry on their shoulders to ease the pain?

but also inflict a different kind upon them

How often does a friend become your anchor but also a leash?

How often is it that you aspire to be like them?

but secretly wish to inspire them

How often do they share their life with you only so much to make you feel included?

but also keep the nitty-gritty hidden in their hearts to make you feel unimportant

How often do you wish you had met them earlier?

but the realisation sinks in the next second that you rather had not

How often do you see them listen to you about your life’s crisis?

but also judge them when they’re busy listening to their thoughts

How often is it that you execute a mutual business idea with them?

but lose them to a calling of their own

How often do you unfold your weakest self in front of them?

only to have them reveal their absentee in times of dire need

How often do these friendships stand the test of time, places, people, circumstances, and ego?

How often do these friendships see the light of maturity?

How often do these friendships fill our hearts even better than love?

but also shatters it into pieces worse than a love

And what do you do with these friendships?

Do you, because of your pride, leave them as is

Or do you make amends for the unlived moments

for the unsaid words

for the unmade promises

for the inexperienced hugs

Do you leave them unfinished?

Or tell them you love and respect them in a way words can’t possibly narrate
