TRUTH BE TOLD

Truth be told I want to be loved.

And I want the kind of love

that won't let go,

that won't let in,

that won't give up,

that won't give in

even when I want to.

The kind of love that keeps going

even when I don't.

Because truth be told,

I don't know how to love myself.

But God knows I'm trying.

God knows I'm looking,

I'm digging,

I'm searching,

I'm finding,

ways to love me

the way I hope you will one day.

And truth be told

how I want to be loved

may not be etched in reality.

Every fiber of my desire

is a thread woven into

what others label as

"unrealistic expectation."

Every trickle of "bare minimum"

is a river of "standard procedure."

Truth be told

I want to be a partner

not just a helper,

a friend

not just a lover.

I want to be ushered into correction,

not forced into submission,

and when I do submit

I want it to be freely given

not birthed from negotiation.

Because truth be told

I'm a princess,

I'm a queen.

Because if Christ died for me

then I'm royalty.

And if I am to be loved

then I should be treated accordingly.

I should be loved in a way

that the lover is so afraid

of disappointing Jesus

that he'll never hurt me.

Because truth be told

I want to be loved.

But loved the way

love is suppose to love.

And if God is love

there's only one way

to know it.
