I zipped up my jacket and left the bag on the motel floor. I had barely enough time to pack what I would need for god knows how long I would be staying. It still seemed funny how over and over again I had promised myself not to drive back to this town, not to return to that park on the hills to wind up the past yet another time.
The walk uphill was quite gloomy and damp. Not having expected the cold, my legs were shivering under my skirt. Thank goodness it wasn’t a long walk. I would be there before I knew it. It embarrassed me to think of how the staff of the motel would have already grown familiar with my face, if not for the new intern they had for the summer.
Right before I set foot into the park, my phone buzzed. I would be damned if it were Olivia or my mom. Practically nobody knew I was here. I was supposed to be packing for my European trip for the week after, not stumbling around the roads I knew all too well to pretend to be lost. Tornado warnings, it said, Take Action! A tornado has been sighted or indicated by weather radar. There is imminent danger to life and property. Move to an interior room on the lowest floor of a sturdy building. Avoid windows. If in a mobile home, a vehicle, or outdoors, move to the closest substantial shelter and protect yourself from flying debris.
It had been years since I last received these kinds of alerts. Before moving away, at most we would get a Tornado Watch. It seemed like the weather here had gotten worse, but I preferred to live in a coastal city anyway.
As I slid my phone back into my pocket, it was the exact moment I saw him: back to the entrance on the swing, facing the mountain view for the rest of the town. I let go of the breath I didn’t know I was holding. Too late to turn back now. No more time for stalling.
I took a step forward without remembering my promise.
