To Be a Bolter

By Aria Raina

when wishes are exhausted and chances are weakly;

you're caught off guard.

don’t look both ways when you cross the road;

for the street has not seen a car in a minute too long.

but then you see one—

not to your rescue, but to nurture your cause;

something that you never thought could be yours.

but your wishes come true with a twist,

and times are tested.

when you need to be rescued, you bolt.

or you watch your corpse and think to yourself, “how inanely,”

because all you did amounted to nothing

if you chose to watch the car burn.
