Thieves

By Shreya

Mere thieves,

Holding onto each other's remnants

Precious, timeworn, long buried.

A shard of me

You’ve known and kept, unknowingly.

And so have I,

Stolen a trace of you.

Now we meet,

Just to act like

Mere strangers.

With so much history,

Still, we pretend.

I remember your jokes,

You remember my laughter.

But we keep the charade alive

You and I,

Once friends,

Now incomplete thieves

Of what we used to be.
