INT. BEDROOM - NIGHT
EVE (26, F) is a bald, anorexic woman in gothic oversized clothes.
By her table, she puts away her pen and slots her letter into an envelope. She struggles to stand up but manages.
She takes one last look to the wilting spider-lily in her vase before walking off-screen.
Sounds of locks and a window sliding are heard.
EVE (V.O.)
To you, my love. First and
foremost, I'm sorry.
CUT TO:
INT. BAR - NIGHT
EVE (18, F) is still wearing those gothic clothes, but it fits her. She has luscious hair, a number of earrings, and is healthy.
After drinking a gulp from her pint, she laughs.
EVE (V.O.)
I know. I'm not myself right now;
I'm not acting like the typical
brash tomboy you met back in Poly.
She takes a puff before wrapping her arms around her boyfriend ADAM (18, M). He is bespectacled and dons a collared shirt and jeans. He winces, sharply breathing out as smoke wafts around.
EVE (V.O.) (CONT'D)
That 'wildflower', you used to call
me, that lugs you around to all my
favourite speakeasies and clubs.
It's a typical love story, now that
I think about it...
INT. BEDROOM - DAY
EVE is lying down on the bed. ADAM is sitting on the floor, leaning against her bedside. They are talking about a manga.
EVE (V.O.)
The nerdy, straight-laced boy and
the chaotic, lively girl. Typical.
2.
EVE (V.O.) (CONT'D)
We always see those archetypes
flying around: Dan Da Dan; Kimi No
Wa; Toradora...
EVE slips out of bed and hugs him tight.
EVE (V.O.) (CONT'D)
I never told you how happy you made
me. Despite all the tattoos, the
cigarettes, the ugly-ass jokes, the
earrings, you still saw me as a
woman.
ADAM kisses her.
EVE (V.O.) (CONT'D)
Your woman.
EVE has a smile that outcompetes the Sun beaming through the window.
EVE (V.O.) (CONT'D)
This stupid woman, who always blows
smoke on your face, throws a
tantrum, drags you out on a whim...
JUMP CUT TO:
INT. DOCTOR'S OFFICE - DAY
ADAM and EVE sit before a doctor whose voice is muffled. ADAM's eyes are downcasted, but otherwise is stoic. EVE's eyes are staring straight through the doctor, with lips trembling and tears welling up.
They hold each other's hands, with EVE's hand clasping tigther.
EVE (V.O.)
Even you would agree I am an idiot.
INT. MRI MACHINE
EVE, lying down on a table, is inserted into the MRI machine.
3.
EVE (V.O.)
If I dropped the cigarettes
earlier, or drank less, or joined
you for morning runs, or went for
annual checkups, or do something -
anything - that was finally
responsible in my miserable,
pathetic, goddamn life, then maybe,
just maybe, I would have bought
myself some more time to be with
you.
CUT TO:
INT. BEDROOM - NIGHT
On EVE's phone screen is a conversation between her and ADAM. Only one-word and single-liner answers are shown.
EVE (V.O.)
It's 'cause of me that you don't
swing by so often anymore.
INT. BATHROOM - NIGHT
She stares at herself. She is now bald, losing the lushness on her face, and cringes at her reflection.
EVE (V.O.)
It hurts, doesn't it? To see the
woman of your life wrinkled, bald,
naked.
INT. BEDROOM - NIGHT
She is crying herself to sleep. Fresh scars are on her inner thigh and wrists.
EVE (V.O.)
I know I'm ugly, my love. I'm
sorry. I'm so, so sorry. I did this
to us. It's all my fault.
CUT TO:
INT. BEDROOM - NIGHT
She stands by her open window, with a cigarette in her hands and an ashtray full of ashes by the windowsill. She peers downwards.
4.
EVE (V.O.)
But I have made peace with it. Or,
at least, as much as I can. Who can
really make peace with something
terminal? But I made peace.
FADE TO BLACK.
EVE (V.O.) (CONT'D)
I know you have been seeing another
woman. Crystal, wasn't it?
INT. BAR - NIGHT
ADAM and EVE are in a bar with their clique. They are merry and clink glasses. EVE's best friend, CRYSTAL, pretends to be drunk and leans on ADAM's shoulder, laughing. EVE glares at CRYSTAL.
EVE (V.O.)
I was angry, sure.
INT. BEDROOM - NIGHT
ADAM is lying down on EVE's bed. EVE straddles him, passionately kissing him.
EVE (V.O.)
I couldn't believe it when our
mutual friend informed me that her
- of all people - wanted to steal
you away from me.
INT. BEDROOM - CONTINUOUS
Both of them are naked, but they are covered with her blanket. ADAM is fast asleep, but EVE is simply resting her head, listening to his heartbeat.
EVE (V.O.)
And yet, I can't stay mad. Once I'm
gone, you will be lonely. You
deserve to be happy. You deserve a
better woman. A woman who will
listen and will do better.
BACK TO:
5.
INT. BEDROOM - NIGHT (1ST SCENE)
Red and white fireworks are blasting by the distance. She sits by the windowsill, legs dangling out. She smiles.
EVE (V.O.)
So, please. Forget about me.
There's nothing left in me anymore.
And it's my fault. And I'm sorry.
It's not your fault.
She leans in and falls.
Right before she hits the ground, time slows down. She smiles to the black sky above.
EVE (V.O.) (CONT'D)
Just know, from the bottom of my
heart, I am happy it was you.
She closes her eyes, letting herself be covered by the dazzling reds-and-whites.
EVE (V.O.) (CONT'D)
I love you. I really do.
CUT TO BLACK.
EVE (V.O.) (CONT'D)
Happy New Year.
FADE IN:
INT. OFFICE ELEVATOR
The humming of the overhead air-con and the shuddering of the elevator are heard. Inside is ADAM (26, M), who is carrying a bouquet of fresh, vibrant cherry blossoms which nests a letter in the middle of it.
Upon hearing the ding of the elevator, he steels himself and strides out of the lift. His office shoes clop against the floor.
ADAM (V.O.)
To my woman...
EXT. OFFICE - NIGHT
He taps his feet, waiting for his Grab to pick up the pace.
6.
ADAM (V.O.)
The ‘wildflower’ that splashed this
‘brick’ with colours he never knew
existed.
(he lets out a deep
breath)
First and foremost, I am sorry.
Once his Grab arrives, he crashes in the backseat.
ADAM
(Muffled, softened)
Adam Goh. Heading to Tampines,
Block 888. Thanks.
ADAM (V.O.)
I am sorry for being ignorant,
neglectful and overall, a coward.
He opens his phone and sees the messages he has sent to EVE are still left unread.
ADAM (V.O.) (CONT'D)
I have no excuse for it. I am
pathetic for running away from you,
when you needed me the most.
CUT TO:
INT. BEDROOM - NIGHT
ADAM and EVE are sitting by her bedside. EVE is clinging onto his arm with tears beading down to the floor. ADAM, expressionless, looks at some corner of the room.
ADAM (V.O.)
You deserve a better man, a man who
wouldn't run away and instead
embraced you. I hate that I am not
that better man. I fucking hate it.
EVE
(Voice trembling)
Please don't leave me. Please...
ADAM only rests his head on top of hers.
ADAM (V.O.)
You deserve better. And I want to
do better. Which is why in this
letter...
CUT TO BLACK.
7.
ADAM (V.O.) (CONT'D)
I will confess everything. To start
off, I will confess that I was
tempted. I shouldn't have.
EXT. CBD AREA - LATE AFTERNOON
EVE runs forward and points at one of her favourite speak easy bars. She runs back, grabs ADAM by the hand, and together, they hurry.
ADAM (V.O.)
I miss those days where you annoyed
me to no end.
INT. BAR - NIGHT
EVE is hollering. She pours another glass for ADAM (much to his rejection), smacks his back and hugs him.
ADAM (V.O.)
It's true - it's always true -
whenever I said you were the reason
for my insomnia.
CUT TO:
INT. BEDROOM - NIGHT
ADAM, in his own bed, is groaning to the ceiling.
ADAM (V.O.)
And the hangovers. And the
migraines, and everything else in
between. You burnt holes into my
wallet; you blew smoke onto my
face; you busted my balls over the
tiniest of things.
CUT TO:
EXT. CBD AREA - DAY
EVE holds up a stray cat and faces it towards ADAM.
EVE
Can we - I mean - you keep him?
Once we get married, I can help
take care of him too!
8.
ADAM
As if. You're just going to play
with him all day.
EVE pouts. ADAM smiles and pets the friendly cat.
ADAM (V.O.)
And yet, I loved it. All of it. And
I miss them. So to even think that
Crystal had a chance...
CUT TO:
EXT. HDB AREA - NIGHT
By the void deck, ADAM is walking away from CRYSTAL. CRYSTAL hangs her head.
ADAM (V.O.)
I am sorry.
CUT TO:
INT. BAR - NIGHT
ADAM, alone in a bar, is nodding back and forth.
ADAM (V.O.)
I confess that you are still the
woman I love.
He walks out to the cold night, sobbing.
ADAM (V.O.) (CONT'D)
What kind of man would leave their
love behind? What man would let
himself be consumed whilst their
loved one is fading away?
He trips. He recoils, with his hands plastered to his face.
ADAM (V.O.) (CONT'D)
I finally confess, to you, that I
am the biggest idiot in the world.
He screams regardless of the passerbys around. He sobs harder.
9.
ADAM (V.O.) (CONT'D)
I'm a dumbass; a fraud; a cheat; an
excuse; a failure... I don't
deserve you. I don't deserve an
angel like you.
CUT TO:
EXT. TAMPINES - NIGHT
Fireworks are setting off far. He thanks the driver and alights.
ADAM (V.O.)
But I want to start over.
He begins walking to her lift.
ADAM (V.O.) (CONT'D)
I want to be with you until the
very end.
He begins running.
ADAM (V.O.) (CONT'D)
I need you. I love you too much to
let you go. I need to be that
better man you deserved.
By the void deck, before he calls for her lift, he hears wailing of police sirens. He scurries over to see a crowd encircling something.
He approaches them and sees EVE's parents by the front. EVE's mother is bawling and screaming her name. EVE's father holds her tight.
ADAM (V.O.) (CONT'D)
Which is why, when you read this
letter and when you give me another
chance, I need to ask:
ADAM finally realises who was in that police tent.
ADAM (V.O.) (CONT'D)
What ring would you like?
Everything becomes muffled.
ADAM
Eve?
(Muffled)
10.
His letter and bouquet of cherry blossoms crash to the floor as he forces himself through the crowd.
ADAM (V.O.)
We have no tomorrow and I can't
wait anymore.
EVE's parents turned around and hugged him tight.
ADAM
(Still muffled, but now
screaming)
EVE?!
ADAM (V.O.)
What wedding gown would you like?
Who shall we invite?
ADAM slips out of her parent's grasp. A policeman catches him but ADAM pushes him away.
ADAM (V.O.) (CONT'D)
How big shall the reception be?
Which church?
More policemen caught him. Unable to slip out of their grasp, ADAM screams for her more and more.
ADAM (V.O.) (CONT'D)
Forgive me for being late.
ADAM is inconsolable now.
ADAM (V.O.) (CONT'D)
I love you, Eve. I really do.
CUT TO:
INT. BAR - NIGHT
ADAM and EVE, tipsy and giddy, leans upon each other, hoping they don't fall off their bar stools.
ADAM (V.O.)
Happy New Year.
