THE WEIGHT THAT CAME WITH MY NAME

My name came carrying things.

Not just syllables.

Instructions.

Stories.

Expectations.

The quiet debts

of people who came before me.

I inherited

things nobody wrote down.

How to keep going

when there isn't enough.

How to make a home

out of almost nothing.

How to swallow disappointment

without serving it

to the children.

How to work.

How to endure.

How to laugh

with an empty pocket.

How to say,

“We will find a way,”

before you know

where the way is.

I inherited strength.

I also inherited

silences.

Old fears

that had learned

how to pass themselves

from hand to hand

without introducing themselves.

Rules

nobody remembered writing.

Wounds

that had become family furniture.

And one day

I looked at what I was carrying

and understood:

Inheritance

is not only

what you receive.

It is also

what you decide

ends with you.

So I kept the courage.

I kept the resourcefulness.

I kept the stubborn faith

that has carried women

through generations

without ever appearing

in a history book.

But some things

some things

I placed at the threshold.

Not hatred.

Not blame.

Just a quiet:

“This stops here.”

My children

do not need every battle

I was handed.

My future

does not need

every fear

my past rehearsed.

The ancestors gave me

a road.

I honor them by continuity.

But I do not honor them

by walking every old path

just because their footprints

are there.

So yes, my name has weight.

I carry it.

And I am learning

that a legacy

is not a load

you drag behind you.

It is a fire you decide

what to do with.

Some flames

must be protected.

Some must be carried forward.

And some;

some must finally be allowed

to bow out.

So when they speak my name

after I am gone,

let them not say

I carried everything.

Let them say:

“She carried what mattered.

And she left us

more room to become”
