The Unheard Voice

I awoke to a thread around me,

a thread my mother tied around my navel.

I tugged it,

so it told me a story,

tucked me to bed

and wrapped me in a lullaby,

swirling around me

to the melody my mother sang.

It told me

that the tiny fingers

that played with the thread

could one day stitch somebody’s joys back together.

The thoughts growing within me

could one day speak

for those who never wanted to wear bangles,

just like me.

The legs I have

might one day walk beside

someone who never wanted flowers in her hair,

just like me.

The voice I had

could speak for the unheard.

But then I heard a knock on my door.

The knock echoed through the womb.

I heard the womb mourn.

In terror,

the thread snapped.

The pink walls turned blue,

and so did I.

I didn’t even know who my mother was,

but they decided

that my tiny fingers

would never play with her hair.

The dreams

the thread tucked inside my mind

and the warmth

of the only home I knew

could never become mine.

Because after a beep,

they whispered,

“It’s a girl.”

And there I remained.

Silent.

Yet the fear of being unheard

still lingers

in a heart without a beat

and in a womb without a thread.
