The Rose, the Sea, and Forever

The wind weaves

the sky’s threads

as well as her sari

that dances

to its music.

The waves erase

her footprints,

just as he tried

to erase the curls

she never admired.

The anklets he gave her

refused to chime

to the birds’ call.

There she stands

on the shore,

longing for

the touch of water,

for the embrace

of air,

waiting for

the call of the seagulls,

waiting for them

to take her

to an arch

carved by the waves

she never stood beneath.

A rose in hand

she holds.

A necklace rests

against her collarbone.

The sun sets

and rises.

She is still standing.

The rose

is withering.

She wants to give it

to the sea

that introduced her

to the smell of salt.

She wants to give it

to the wind

that taught her

promises, when lifted,

can carry you.

She wants to give it

to the birds

that sang words

he never said

to her.

She takes a step back,

then a step forward.

Before she could

throw it into the sea,

the waves

carried it away.

Perhaps they knew

he promised

the necklace

would never part

from her heart.

But the chain broke,

and little by little,

she decided

even forever

has a final day
