The Thread Between Us
By Aarna Gupta
I smiled at him everyday, keeping my eyes low,
He sent me letters everyday written with ink that seemed to glow.
It didn't—it was just me, in love,
He did too, for he held my hand without the glove.
He asked me to dance with him, under the ballroom chandelier,
And I too seemed to forget the grandeur whenever I had him near.
I fell in love with him, when I saw him riding his horse,
He fell in love with me, with no reason, no remorse.
The letters, the flowers, came everyday,
The sound of his voice, made me sway.
I felt the spark, sizzling between us,
The flowers bloomed at the sight of us.
Everyone knew we were in love,
And I knew it would stay even in times rough.
But suddenly, the silence filled the room,
The teary smile, was perhaps the harbinger of doom.
The red string of fate somehow broke into two,
The golden ink of the letters now turned blue.
We were in love, I'm sure of it,
Maybe he wasn't— I doubt it.
Everyone could feel it, we sure had something,
Or was it just me? Was it really nothing?
Was it love, or was he just pretending?
I still wonder, was it just a beautiful misunderstanding?
