The Surface Is Fine
By D.S.S. Lalitha Ujwala
Hey put on a happy face,
Say everything's okay, while monsters crawl beneath your skin,
Hey put on a happy face,
Hide everything lies behind that face,
Hey put on a happy face,
When there's a smile on your face,
It clearly means everything's alright, at least on the surface,
Who would even care about the ugly mess you are underneath?
Nobody cares, so just
Put on a happy face,
Perform every second of your day,
To the point, you forget who you are without it,
Just pretend, pretend, pretend,
Why make people worry?
Why be a burden?
Just put on a happy face,
Then everything's okay,
Let no one know what goes on,
Between 4 walls,
What happens when that mask falls off, don't let them know
Shhhh......
Stay quiet, no one wants to hear that you are struggling,
Everyone has problems,
Just push through,
Just work, work, work
Til you snap in half,
Til you die because of the pressure,
Til that mask breaks,
put on a happy face...............

A chilling poem exposing emotional suppression, toxic positivity, and the silent destruction caused by constant performance.
