THE SUPREME PURPOSE OF PEACE

When I first heard about the two world wars,

I wondered what humanity was fighting for, or against.

Because I couldn’t fathom the reason

Why peace had to shed its young wings before it could fly.

I saw great nations rise and fall like rivers swollen in storms.

I saw beautiful cities burn and crumble to ashes.

I saw humans packed in body bags.

And I was amazed by how far we had moved from the teachings of peace.

I heard the cries of toddlers and mothers.

I felt the weight of hopelessness settling on their shoulders.

I saw a world teetering on the edge.

And questioned if peace could ever truly rise again.

Then I asked myself:

What is the meaning of peace when the battle is won but the people aren’t free?

What is the purpose of peace when freedom is selectively granted?

What is the SI unit of peace when justice cannot be guaranteed?

And equality cannot be attained?

What is the victory of peace when the conquered still live in fear?

And the conquerors feel no guilt for their gory glory?

What is the crown of peace when the voices of the less privileged go unnoticed?

What is the value of peace when there’s a price tag on it?

What is peace when we can't all live comfortably in its shelter?

What is peace when it is not for all, but just for a few who can afford it?

For I know that Peace is ancient yet patient.

It is kind but not blind.

It neither manipulates nor oppresses the defenceless.

It is fair and just to all humans, regardless of their race, gender, religious beliefs, or social status.

Peace isn't perfect, but it doesn’t thrive in hostility.

It isn’t flawless, but it cannot survive in the shadows of hypocrisy.

It isn't a charity project,

Or a favour given to the powerful or the privileged.

It is a responsibility,

A pledge to be a fearless voice amidst the hurricane of humanitarian crisis.

Peace is not a cute white dove in the sky.

It is not a shrine with a voodoo to pray to,

It is the conscience to prevent harm before it’s done,

The kindness to heal without being asked,

The willingness to forgive when vengeance feels easier,

And the discernment to choose love when every path favours war.

Let peace reign in Sudan and DR Congo!

Let peace reign in Tanzania and Somalia!

Let peace reign in Gaza and Ukraine!

Let peace reign in Haiti!

Let peace reign in my world!

Because when the light of peace stays green,

Children and young people will dream again.

Nations will stop honking at each other,

And finally, learn to march together towards the common good.

Humanity will breathe as one again.

Love will heal the rifts within and between countries.

At last, the world will smile again,

At last, your world and mine will dwell in peace.
