Untitled

It's dark, the evening has twilight,

and the world has quieted —

the night has sung the world to sleep,

but I am awake in thought.

My mind is buzzing, humming,

soaring, roaring, diving,

and then buried in laughter.

I am thinking of a girl —

Rundu born, Elcin schooled,

built like a 1970 Chevelle SS.

She has pupils dark as the night sky,

irises that can hold the moon,

eyes deep enough to drown stars,

lips with curves that could rewrite history,

a smile as bright as Polaris herself,

and the heart of the first Queens.

The most gorgeous thing

I have ever seen on a pair of legs.

And then there are those occasional bursts of blushes

that steal air from my lungs

and leave me breathless.

I have learned to write for her —

this woman, a goddess and my lover.

I always knew I would fall,

but not like this.

They say soul meets soul on lovers' lips,

so every time we kiss,

my soul blossoms

like black roses with the coming of spring.

I can taste forever in that moment,

and I know she is here to stay,

even though I have no evidence.

Maybe it's the contentment

of her hand resting in mine,

or her alluring gaze,

with the power to rose my melanin-soaked cheeks.

Could be the fact that, when I was in training,

she wrote the softest words and kissed them.

I want a daughter

with her gentle heart and mysterious eyes.

I wish to become dust with her

and make Romeo jealous.

I owe each kiss to those lips and cheeks.

I am envious of the golden rays

and the crystal raindrops —

of how they, too, caress her form.

I want her to be mine and mine alone,

but Miles has taught me

that something so beautiful, so vast,

could never belong only to me.

I see her light,

and I now know it would be selfish

to hold her hostage from the world.

I am now learning to adore her

from five steps back.

I still wish to be the air in her lungs —

to be privileged as to fill

a creature of such glorious feature.

The thought that she needs air

more than she needs me

still burdens the soul.

How selfish to believe

I could be everything to her.

(This poem has no title because I wanted it to be free, not bound to anything but the notion of her)
