The Shells

There’s a woven palm basket

sitting on the stair,

empty, waiting,

no one knows it’s there.

I see it, but in

my mind’s eye

it’s full up

to the brim,

with the shells

we could have collected

had we

walked along the

shore with

sandy toes.

Had we spotted them

and smiled.

Walked for miles and miles.

Shells that would have

happily filled the quiet,

yet natural,

gaps beneath the chats.

Cowries, moons, and olives.

Oyster, conus, clam.

A basket full of

shells and words we

would have shared,

had the sunset had the

chance to warm

our backs.

Now I just glance at

it as I walk

upstairs again.

Woven delicately from palm.
