The Shadow of the Peacock
The city of Pataliputra was filled with chatter. Torches illuminated the streets from wooden beams; across the town flowed the Ganges, carrying the secrets of the kingdom. Near the river stood the palace; a dim light shone from a window. Inside the royal archives, Amrita sat silently. Before her were birch bark and ink, not for writing but to memorise the faces of three men who were to be killed.
Amrita was a Vishkanya, a poisonous girl. From the age of five, she had been trained to be deadly. Every day, she was given a small dose of poison-from snake venom, poisonous plants, or even arsenic-making her resistant to it. She was very beautiful and smart, easily able to deceive anyone and trap them in her lethal schemes. By then she was nineteen, and her body was already adapted to handling poisons, making her a loyal weapon for Emperor Chandragupta.
A shadow appeared near the door. It was the prime minister, Chanakya. Amrita welcomed him as he entered. He nodded and said, “The Greeks have arrived.” He took a quick breath and went near the window, looking at the Ganges, and continued, “One of them is planning to burn down the storehouse of grain. His name is Leonidas.”
She softly asked, “What should I do?”
“A kingdom is like a body; if the food supplies were destroyed, then all would be lost. You must stop him by tonight. You should go as a dancer to the Kaumudi Mahotsava and kill him.”
The palace garden was decorated with flowers. The torches had been lit and placed everywhere; even the full moon was shining brightly, giving extra light to the festival. People were celebrating joyfully under the night sky.
Amrita walked through the crowd gracefully, wearing exquisite dresses and jewellery that jingled softly. She noticed Chanakya. Unnoticed by the allies, Chanakya indicated the target to her. She noticed her target. Leonidas was speaking to the governor and watching the dance performance.
Leonidas asked, “What is this occasion for?”
The governor gracefully answered, “It is celebrated to enjoy the bright moon of autumn, marking the end of the monsoon and the beginning of the prosperous and joyful season.”
As Leonidas listened, his face transformed into a devilish smile because, despite the joyful season, he contemplated the future ruin of this kingdom. Amrita approached and started dancing, grabbing the attention of the Greeks, especially Leonidas, with her moves. Slowly everyone's attention was on her. Leonidas was mesmerised by her beauty and her moves and asked the governor about her. The governor said, “she is one of the best dancers in town.”
Leonidas's suspicions faded, and he watched her closely. Like many others, he too fell into her trap and succumbed to her allure. At the right moment, Amrita slipped and fell, but Leonidas caught her just in time. “Be careful,” he said.
Amrita looked at him slowly, “I am sorry.”
“The heat is too much here.” She alluringly said, “Come, let's go somewhere cooler.”
While they were walking, Amrita noticed the pouch at his belt. She took him to a quiet terrace where no one saw and offered him a glass of wine. Initially, Leonidas hesitated, but eventually he drank from the same bottle of wine that she was also drinking from. The poison took immediate effect, and he started to cough. “Something is happening to me. Go, call someone.”
Amrita shows no emotion and stands resolute; it is her duty to poison the evildoers. “You can't burn our city,” she says.
He collapses and dies. Amrita looks at his pouch and discovers not only an incendiary weapon but also the map of the grain storehouse, which bears the seal of the three ministers of their kingdom. Then she realises that it is not an attack from the outside but a betrayal from within.
Before she can report the incident to the prime minister, someone blocks her path. It is Prince Simhanada, the emperor's cousin and her childhood friend. The prince looks at the dead body and says, “I saw everything.” He approaches her and whispers in her ear, “I saw how you deceived him and gave him your poisoned drink.”
Stunned, Amrita says, “He was a threat to the kingdom.”
“And the map?” the prince asks. “One of the seals is my father’s."
“Why do you want to ruin your kingdom?” Amrita asks.
“That's none of your business.” He grabs her hand to snatch the map. She bites his hand and tries to run. He takes the wine bottle and hits her on the head. She falls. He steps closer to her, kneels and grabs her neck. “We were friends, weren't we? I gave you my first toy. You should have given me the map when I asked you for it. See what has happened now.” He takes the map and leaves.
Amrita lies unconscious for several hours. When she regains consciousness, she is laid on the bed. The prime minister arrives, sends everyone out, walks over to her and asks, “What happened?”
“It is Prince Simhanada.”
“I knew it. He and his father are conspiring against the king and the kingdom. But we can't prove that to the king without proof.”
“We can prove it.”
“How?”
Amrita slowly gets out of bed and opens a locked drawer. “This is the real map of the storehouse, sealed by his father and two other ministers.”
Chanakya examines it. “This is enough to expose those traitors.” With enthusiasm and curiosity, he asks, “How did you do it?”
Amrita smiles and says, “I saw the seal of the prince's father and had already noticed the prince following me. I knew he would come and take the map from me, so I swapped it with the map of the enemy's kingdom.”
Chanakya proudly says, “No wonder you are one of the best and most trusted vishkanya in our kingdom.”
The next morning, the sun rises over the Ganges. Amrita stands on the terrace and watches the calmly flowing water. “The danger is over. The traitors have been quietly removed and sentenced to death,” Chanakya says.
Amrita turns to Chanakya and asks, “Is this the cost of protecting the kingdom? Do we need to become monsters so that others can live peacefully?” Amrita feels guilty about her friend, Prince Simhanada.
Chanakya looks at her, seeing the weight of the prince's sentence in her eyes. “We are the foundation of the temple,” he says. “We stay hidden so that the beautiful part can shine. That is our duty.”
Amrita bows to him and walks away into the shadows, unseen and unheard, scheming for her next mission. The kingdom is safe because of the girl who looks beautiful but carries death within her.
