The Sedative

Original Submission by CADIENTE, Raphael P.

I am a needle unsterile and I want to go back to the things they were before. Before I was sunk deep in a poorly settled black goo because I had told myself I loved being hot and invisible in the night. Before I tried to be more than one milestone that would define my existence. I love to be in the light and I love to ooze in practice. I love being in the laboratory, in the cupboards with that red scent kicking an aphrodisiac descent into vanity. I would love to terrify more people and fulfill an infinitesimal job. Although, apparently, I am not a toothbrush or a book. You can’t use me twice. You have to discard. And, I am nothing after I penetrate skin. Before I was at the bottom of the yellow trashbin, my whole dignity was on the palm of a boy who was shaking in an already failed practical exam. So, not only do I get to die in a way I am unsatisfied with but I do not take my leave with a titular, “the great”. Because, that crybaby pulled off a stunt that only prisoners with no skills could compare—a rust thinking I am worthy in his hands. I hate that swollen face. That face that consistently shows that he is the weakest link in a human race. I hate him; I wish he would stop that contorted look like his pain is as unbearable as mine. No amount of shame that his parents provided him could make him perform better or even perform at all. I wish I had something lethal inside me and he was my last and only victim. And, after his last breath..

After his last breath, I am used up. My purpose goes out with him because, after him, I am unremembered. Maybe I was the only cling providing him something to hold onto. It’s pathetic for him but it’s pathetic for me. I cannot accept this death. Why would he die in front of me? I will not entertain this idea anymore. I was a needle sterile because of that boy and he knew, at least, that well. He looks at me as if I were enraged at him and maybe he has at least one chokehold over something, me. Because he wants me to think he is the weakest. He gave me life. I hold his ambition and his prowess. He hides it inside me and I hate him for thinking it. Why trick me into shooting our vein? I was always going to be bitter even if I knew that, sooner or later, irrelevance would capture me. He is as unprepared as I am with death. I am mad that he is the only thing that I could be mad at, and whom I actually know inadvertently. I want him to calm down. It’s just a practical exam. It’s not his entire life and he should stop crying. I work on a different accent. “You need to walk out.” I prick him in the thumb with full artificial force. Now, we’re even. He is excused to wash out the bleeding wound. At least, with nothing pouring out of me, I can still pacify with a bent needle. That is the most I can do. I may be as sharp as the children say but my kindness can be loud. I can scare someone to life in front of a bathroom stall. Now, he is calm. We are calm between the slumps of necessity and the desire for death.
