I am a kite

Original Submission by Jennice Yap Yi Han

I am a kite

I am a kite,

Borrowing the wind, I drift across the sky,

watching the clouds go by,

never knowing where they wander,

or why they fly.

The grass is bearing its seeds,

the wind is stirring its leaves.

We hold each other tightly,

and somehow, that is enough —

even if giving my heart to you,

and let you pull it through,

forgetting the pain

that tears me anew.

I am just a kite,

But still I dream

of doing something

for you.

This world that tortures me and you —

I want to hold it, too,

with you.

I once forgot I was a kite.

I roared against the wind,

thrashed beneath the rain.

I fought through every storm

and chased the rainbow again,

until we drifted far,

Far as heaven from the ground.

Yet still the string held tight,

and from afar,

we gazed into each other’s eyes.

I am still a kite,

And the moment you let go,

I was lost, bewildered,

with nowhere left to go.

I could no longer do anything for you,

and so the rainbow I once chased

slowly lost its hue.

And yet —

What a beautiful world this is:

sunlight sweeping through the air,

Breezes brushing through everywhere,

seasons turning, worlds renewed —

None of it is you,

yet none of it is not you.

I am no longer a kite.

This world

is your last testament,

and I —

I am your only heirloom.
